Sattva (definition): Purity, a state of harmony, balance, joy, intelligence, wisdom.
Sattva is the quality that Yogis point their attention towards, making liberation possible. The SATTVA yoga practice was born out of one question, one seat and one mantra. The question is ‘Who Am I,’ the seat is meditation, and the mantra is AUM. The sattvic state of being is the best suited for spiritual practice.
SATTVA Yoga is not an attempt to separate oneself from all of the other schools or branches of yoga, but rather to give a focal point and direction towards a state of being. SATTVA Yoga is about balancing body, breath and mind so we can engage with this divine potential and ground it into reality. Being sattvic is the purest expression of body, breath and mind working together with the intelligence that naturally exists within you. This intelligence is what connects us to divine consciousness.
SATTVA Yoga is the merging of two ancient paths, that of Hatha Yoga and Raja Yoga. Hatha Yoga is known as the Yoga of force, using the physical body and breath to balance the energy of sun & moon, Ida and Pingala. We begin by purifying and cleansing the physical and energetic bodies until we reach a level of sensitivity and intelligence of how the body and breath work together. The physical body and the breath work together to become a conduit of inspired potential, the ultimate seat of the Yogi.
Many of our mental and emotional patterns are stored within the body and through the dynamic physical movements of the SATTVA Yoga practice, we give room for the energetic pathways to flow freely. Once the energetic pathways flow freely, the breath becomes the communicator between the seat of the body and the mind. To understand ourselves fully we need to look within…this leads us to the practice of Raja Yoga.
In Raja Yoga we focus on three principles: concentration, meditation and absorption. These three practices directly engage our thoughts and mind, bringing clarity, intelligence and wisdom. This part of the SATTVA practice is done in a meditative seat. Through the SATTVA meditation practice, we bring light and clarity into the tendencies of our thought patterns, emotional states and expression of our personality, ultimately bringing a balance between our inner and outer realities.
SATTVA Yoga has a strong emphasis on inquiring into who we are and why we are here, facilitating this deeper understanding of self and how we connect to our environment around us. Self-inquiry gives the practitioner the wisdom to tap into and develop a relationship to the most authentic experience of who you are.
The SATTVA Yoga practice is dedicated to inspiring practitioners to use the balance found from within their practice and to live from that place of inspired potential that exists within all of us…
